The Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, Honourable Isiaka Wasiu, on Saturday explained why some venues were not chosen to host some events of the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged, Gateway Games.

Isiaka gave this clarification in an interview with newsmen, stating that the decision on venues for the National Sports Festival, rests on the shoulders of the National Sports Commission.

He explained that the decisions on which venues to be used, and which will be left out, was done free from politics as this will go against the main objectives of hosting the sports feast.

He further explained that the objectives of the National Sports Festival is to unite Nigerians under the umbrella of sports not as a political weapon.

Honourable Isiaka emphasized that the hosting rights of the sports fiesta is primarily decided at the federal level, with limited input from the host state.

“It’s not state sport festival, we invited them show them all your facilities, the decision of where the events took place was fully decided by the federal government.

“It is not a deliberate action and it’s not political,” he affirmed.

He went on to add that the Ogun State Government, through the Ogun State Sports Commission will maintain the sporting facilities in the Gateway State, and will upgrade and construct more sporting facilities to make Ogun State a sports hub in Nigeria.

He highlighted some of the sporting transformation which has taken place in the state, assuring that this is just the tip of an iceberg.

“The swimming pool side before now was just a mere bush and now we have transformed it completely. We are going to have a chalet, we want to define it in a way that we have a section for sports, one for recreation and the other for social activities. We will make sure that all the the space in the sport complex is fully utilized.”

He revealed that the Ogun Sports Commission is incharge of maintaining the five stadia in the art and cultural state, assuring that under the watchful eyes of Sports Commission none of the facilities will go bad.

“We have five stadia in Ogun State, two in Abeokuta, one in Ijebu Ode, one in Sagamu . Presently we have developed two. We want to develop the five stadia and there’s no way we would develop five stadium and expect government to maintain the five, so the possibilities of public private partnership is very high.

“I can assure you that none of the facilities will be allowed to rot again,” he affirmed. “We’ve invested heavily, and the government is determined to get value for money. Our facilities will not go to waste,” he concluded.
