In a bid to develop the female football in Nigeria, some former athletes are giving back to the community, organising programmes to discover and harness the huge talent base across the country.
One such program was organised by the Chioma Ajunwa Foundation in partnership with the Lilly Legend Sports Academy, at the Umuchu Mini Stadium in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, South-East, Nigeria.
The event which took place on Saturday the 12th of July, 2025 also featured a wellness programme for women, with former Olympics long jump champion, Chioma Ajunwa heading the exercise.
Chioma Ajunwa expressed appreciation to the Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, Mr. Chibueze Ofobuike for his continued support to the development of grassroot sports.
The former long jumper stressed that with the support of kind-hearted individuals with deep pockets they can bridge the gap between what is obtainable in other parts of the world.
She also thanked the Chairman for building the Umuchu Mini Stadium, venue of the program. Emphasizing that it has gone a long way in improving the sporting infrastructure in the community, alluding to the fact that his kind and noble-hearted gesture facilitated the hosting of the event.
“The talent hunt was a huge success and also the morning exercise for the Community was fantastic,” Mrs. Ajunwa said. Adding that many young promising young and passionate players were spotted at the event.
Commenting on the outcome of the programme Amarachi Lilian Ezeabasili proprietor of Lilly Legend Sports Academy said the she was excited with the number of young girls who participated.
“It is our pleasure to see these girls turn out in numbers. From this group we are going to have future players that will represent the country.
“We glad that sports offers them an opportunity to do something better with their lives,” She concluded.
