The ancient and iconic Rock City of Abeokuta is bracing for impact as the maiden West Africa Para Games storms the MKO Abiola Stadium this Friday, November 28, marking a historic moment for para-sport in the region.
All eyes will be on Ogun State Governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, the sport-loving chief host expected to officially declare the Games open.
Once the flame is lit, over 500 para-athletes across 11 sports will launch into six days of fierce competition, national pride and personal glory.
Backed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN) and the Ogun State Government, organisers say every detail, from security to medicals, accommodation to transportation has been locked in for a world-class event befitting the continent’s finest special athletes.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Honourable Bukola Olopade has urged Ogun residents to troop out and show massive support, especially for Team Nigeria, who are seeking to dominate on home soil.
Dikko hailed the Games as another milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy (RHINSE),” which has powered Nigeria’s return to hosting multiple international events after decades of drought.
“Setting the pace by hosting this first edition is a testament to Mr President’s inclusive commitment to sports development,” Dikko said.
Olopade reinforced the message, stressing that Nigeria’s para-athletes, renowned for their courage and global success—deserve a platform of this magnitude.
“Hosting these Games proves again that Nigeria is capable of staging international competitions, and we remain focused on raising the bar even higher,” he said.
Once the fireworks of the opening ceremony settle, Nigeria will immediately square up against Cameroon in Amputee Football, setting the tone for a week of regional rivalry and unforgettable moments.
The stage is set. The athletes are ready. Abeokuta is about to make history.
