...Enabulele hails Senator Neda Imasuen's grassroots drive

The maiden Benin Unity Cup exploded into action in Benin City today with colour, fanfare, and a clear message, grassroots football in Edo State is entering a new era.
Sponsored by Senator Neda Imasuen, the tournament kicked off at the Crescent Sports Club, Irhirhi, with a vibrant ceremony attended by top sports administrators, football stakeholders, and a sea of enthusiastic fans.
Among the dignitaries was the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Honourable Amadin Desmond Enabulele, who praised the initiative as a major boost for youth development.
The opening match saw Ovia North-East and Ikpoba-Okha lock horns in a tense, tactical showdown that ended 0–0, but the stalemate was anything but dull.
Both teams displayed grit, intensity, and flashes of individual brilliance, signalling the kind of fierce competition the tournament promises.
Scouts, already on high alert, took notes as several youngsters impressed despite the lack of goals.
Speaking at the ceremony, Enabulele hailed Senator Imasuen for “investing where it matters most,” calling the Unity Cup a priceless platform for identifying future stars.
He revealed that scouts from the Sports Commission would monitor every fixture closely, with standout players in line for opportunities at Bendel Insurance FC.
He further urged the senator, private individuals, and corporate organisations to extend their support to other sports, noting that Edo State is bursting with talent in disciplines beyond football, talents waiting for their moment of discovery.
Edo FA Chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, echoed the excitement, describing the tournament as the long-awaited gateway to uncover raw football gems across Edo South.
He expressed confidence that the competition would produce players capable of shining on national and international stages.
Senator Imasuen, the vision bearer behind the Unity Cup, thanked all participating teams and officials, explaining that the tournament was created to “discover, nurture, and provide pathways” for grassroots footballers.
He added that scouts from across Nigeria and possibly from abroad, would be attending live matches to spot promising talent.
He encouraged the players to give their best and uphold discipline, fair play, and sportsmanship, stressing that the tournament aims to shape not just footballers, but well-rounded ambassadors of the sport.
In a forward-looking promise, the senator assured fans and athletes that other sports, including boxing, cycling, tennis, and basketball, will soon benefit from similar developmental initiatives.
The curtain raiser may have ended scoreless, but the message from Day One is loud and clear.
The Benin Unity Cup is here to reshape grassroots sports, ignite dreams, and elevate Edo talent to the national and global map.
