Cameroon’s U-17 Lions roared to life in spectacular fashion, dismantling Gabon 5–1 in their opening match of the UNIFFAC Tournament at the historic Stade Tata Raphaël.
It was a statement performance from coach Alioum Saidou and his young guns, who turned an early setback into a ruthless masterclass.
The match exploded into action from kickoff, with both sides desperate to make a strong first impression.
But it was Gabon who struck first. Just 10 minutes in, Élise Emmanuel stunned goalkeeper Glory Kingue Missinga to give the Panthers a 1–0 lead.
That goal woke the Lions.
Saidou barked instructions from the touchline, and his boys responded with bite and belief. In the 21st minute, Omar Amir Tsombeng restored parity with a composed finish to make it 1–1 and that was only the beginning.
Cameroon seized control with maturity beyond their years. On the half-hour mark, Arnold Massekon of Best Talent Sport Academy, produced a superb aerial control before firing home to put Cameroon ahead 2–1.
Gabon tried to rally, but the Lions were relentless.
Stanley Tendiangku extended the lead after a slick combination with Rony Balisage, showcasing brilliant chemistry between the two youngsters. The floodgates were open at 3–1.
Rony Baliag and Moussa Cherif Abas then joined the party, putting the game beyond doubt and sealing an emphatic 5–1 victory.
Captain Karel Krys led from the front as Cameroon announced themselves as serious contenders for the Uniffac crown.
Their attacking fluidity, defensive organization, and mental strength after conceding early will send a warning to the rest of the competition.
Next up is a crucial second group clash against the Central African Republic and if this performance is anything to go by, the Lions are only just getting started.
