The Bayelsa State Governor, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, has paid a moving tribute to the late Barinada Barry Mpigi, describing him as a man whose life left an enduring mark on individuals and communities across the Niger Delta.

Governor Diri spoke on Sunday during an outing and thanksgiving service held in honour of the departed lawmaker at Beth-El Anglican Church in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The solemn gathering drew family members, political associates, and well-wishers who came to celebrate the life and legacy of the former senator.

Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, Diri described Mpigi as more than a colleague, noting that their bond, which began in the House of Representatives and extended into the Senate, blossomed into brotherhood.

He recalled their shared commitment to advancing the development of the Niger Delta, emphasizing that the late senator was courageous, vibrant, and deeply devoted to public service.

“Senator Mpigi was a friend and a brother,” Diri said. “Though I could not be present earlier due to official engagements, I made it a duty to be here today to honour his memory and speak to his family.”

The governor expressed regret over his absence during earlier funeral rites, citing state responsibilities, including hosting the President.

He, however, stressed the importance of honouring the dead through presence, remembrance, and the preservation of their ideals.

In a deeply reflective tone, Diri spoke on the inevitability of death, acknowledging the pain of loss while urging acceptance of divine will.

He noted that although many had wished for Mpigi to live longer, especially to bury his aged father, fate had taken its course.

“We would have loved him to be with us,” he said. “But who are we to question God, who knows the beginning from the end.”

Beyond political achievements, the Bayelsa helmsman emphasized that true legacy lies in relationships and impact.

He urged Nigerians to cherish human connections, forgive one another, and focus on the values that outlive public office.

“It is not the offices we occupy that matter. Offices are temporary. It is the relationships we build and the value we add to lives that endure,” he stated.

Governor Diri offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, particularly the father, widow, Mrs. Patricia Mpigi, and the children, encouraged them to find comfort in the meaningful life the late senator lived.

On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, he prayed for strength and fortitude for the family in this difficult time.

As part of his tribute, he also pledged to donate a bus to the church built by the late senator, as well as a car to the resident minister.

Dignitaries at the service included Magnus Abe and other serving and former lawmakers, alongside members of the Bayelsa State delegation.

The gathering served not only as a farewell but as a celebration of a life defined by service, friendship, and lasting impact, values that will continue to resonate in the hearts of many.
